Indian Railways provides different types of Retiring Rooms to its passengers at various stations throughout the country. Read on to learn more about retiring rooms, general rules for booking them, and how you can use the PNR number to book a retiring room at any station.
What is an IRCTC Retiring Room?
The IRCTC retiring Room is a type of accommodation provided by Indian Railways. It is available at all major railway stations where a passenger with a valid PNR number can stay for a few days. There are numerous options available, including single, double, and dorm rooms with and without AC facilities. However, to book a retiring room, one must have a railway ticket (Confirmed/RAC). Remember that retiring rooms can only be booked at the origin and destination stations. You can reserve retiring rooms both online and offline.
Rules for Booking Railway Retiring Rooms
The Indian Railway has published certain rules for booking and cancelling the Retiring Rooms. The general rules for IRCTC Retiring Rooms are as follows:
- Minimum duration of the booking is 12 Hrs, and the Maximum is 48 Hrs.
- The maximum number of days for booking a retiring Room is two days. The charges will be collected for the entire day, regardless of the length of stay.
- If the room is occupied for more than one day after retiring, the charge from the following day will be 25% higher for each day, subject to the availability of a vacant room.
- When leaving the room, the passenger must notify the in-charge or caretaker and hand over the keys to them.
Combinations of Room Accommodation
The following rules apply to room accommodation combinations:
- One passenger: Can be allocated in one Single Bed Room or One Double Bed Room or One Bed in Dormitory.
- Two passengers: Can be allocated in one Double Bed Room or Two Bed in Dormitory.
- Three passengers: Can be allocated in (one Double Bed Room + One Single Bed Room) or Three Bed in Dormitory.
- Four passengers: Can be allocated in Two Double Bed Rooms or Four beds in Dormitory.
- Five passengers: Can be allocated in Two Double Bed Rooms or Five beds in Dormitory.
- Six passengers: Can be allocated in Two Double Bed Rooms or Six beds in Dormitory.
Book Retiring Room Online with PNR Number
Presently, online booking of Retiring Rooms is made through IRCTC Website at 505 Indian Railways stations. Passengers can book Retiring Rooms when seeking reservation in advance on payment of usual charges.

How to Book a Retiring Room Online Using PNR number?
Booking retiring room with your PNR number is easy. Follow the steps below:
- Step 1: Go to the IRCTC Tourism website. Please note that you can book the Retiring room online only from this website.
- Step 2: After opening the IRCTC Tourism website, click on the “Accommodation” tab. Now select the Retiring Room option.
- Step 3: Enter your PNR (Passenger Name Record) Number. PNR is a ten-digit number available on your IRCTC booked ticket at the top. After entering the PNR Number carefully, click the search button to get the result.
- Step 4: On the next page, you have to decide whether you want to book your retiring room on Source station or Destination station. If you want to book the Retiring room at the Source station, click on the source button, and if you want to book the retiring room at the Destination station, click on the destination button.
- Step 5: Then select the Check-in Date, Check-out Date, Bed Type and A/C & non-AC etc.
- Step 6: Check the availability by clicking the “Availability” button.
- Step 7: After you get the availability, select the Room no. and Slot Duration you want. Click on the “Proceed” button to move further.
- Step 8: It will redirect you to the IRCTC login page. Now login with your IRCTC username and password. But, if you are an unregistered user, then click on “Guest login”. Then, the complete booking details will be shown.
- Step 9: Select “Room no” of each passenger for booking the room. Then select the Id card type and card no. Now click on the "Proceed" button.
- Step 10: Complete booking details will appear on the screen. Click on “Make Payment” to pay the booking charge of retiring rooms. Select the appropriate payment method according to your choice and proceed with your payment.
How to Book an IRCTC Retiring Room with PNR Number Offline?
You need to follow these steps to book a retiring room offline:
- Visit a railway near to your home that has a retiring room facility.
- Provide your PNR number along with the PNR status (confirmed/RAC) of your ticket to the retiring room in charge. He/she will check the availability of rooms and provide you with the details.
- Proceed with the booking as per your requirement.
Mostly, the retiring room facility is situated at railway stations next to the chief ticket inspector’s office or current booking enquiry counters. It is managed by on duty TE.
How to Cancel Your Retiring Room Online?
- Step 1: Visit the IRCTC Tourism website.
- Step 2: Login using your IRCTC User Id and Password if you have booked a retiring room with your registered user account.
- Step 3: If you have booked Retiring Room Online with guest login, then login with your Email Id and Mobile number.
- Step 4: After login, select the “Booked Ticket” option.
- Step 5: Then select “Retiring Room Booked Ticket Option”. Select the ticket you want to cancel and then click the cancel ticket button.
Resumption of Retiring Rooms Booking at Stations
Zonal Railways have been given permission to local railway administration to decide on the reopening of retiring rooms at stations on the basis of local conditions and following the protocols related to COVID that the state Government issues. Accordingly, the booking of Retiring Rooms, Rail Yatri Niwas, and Hotels which IRCTC manages, was resumed.
However, looking at the current situation, many special express trains and passenger trains services are paused. For the convenience of passengers, Railways has allowed the operation of retiring rooms at stations, subject to the fulfilment of protocols issued by the Government. But this convenience was removed following the lockdown announcement to avert the spread of COVID 19.
Resumption of Some Retiring Rooms at Railway Stations From 15.03.2021
Retiring Room Booking has been Opened at Madurai (MDU), Jaipur [JP], Gorakhpur [GKP], Bilaspur, Kachiguda, Lucknow NE [LJN], Rajendra Nagar (RJPB), Sealdah (SDAH), Tatanagar (TATA), Tiruchirappalli (TPJ), Tirupati [TPTY], Udupi, Vadodara [BRC], Ahmedabad, Madgaon, Thivim. Retiring Rooms Booking is Suspended at Other Stations due To Covid-19.
Some Retiring Rooms Reopened at Railway Stations From 18.01.2021
Indian Railways declared that IRCTC Retiring Room booking is now available at Tiruchchirapali (TPJ), Jaipur (JP), Sealdah (SDAH), Madurai (MDU) (Check-in w.e.f 18.01.2021), and TPTY (Check-in w.e.f 18.01.2021) stations. However, retiring Room booking at other stations is suspended due to COVID 19.
